If you are traveling overseas with a laptop or desktop computer chances are you won't need a voltage converter. But would you risk the chance of power surges to it? In some countries they happen frequently.
Most laptops are multi-voltage and will operate on voltages ranging from 100-240 volts. Most desktop computers are dual voltage and can be switched from 110-120 to 220-240 volts. That's right! Most computers do not require a voltage converter! They do however need to make safe connections to foreign power and telephone systems. NOTE: Computer peripherals including monitors, printers, and speakers may require a voltage converter.
Safe Computer Connections
You use a surge protector with your computers in your home and in your office. It makes sense that you use one when you travel overseas to countries with 220-240 volt electricity. ONLY use a surge protector designed to operate on 220-240 volt power systems such as Voltage Valet's EuroSurge™ shown below. IMPORTANT: Do not attempt to use a 110-120 volt North American surge protector on a 220-240 volt power system, even with a step down transformer. This will damage the 110-120 volt surge protector and may damage your computer.
Voltage Valet's EuroSurge™ provides complete surge protection for your multi-voltage laptop or dual voltage desktop computer while traveling in countries with 220-240 volt power sources. The EuroSurge also includes surge protection for your modem and a built-in Tax Impulse Filter that eliminates unwanted "tax pulse" signals that can disrupt your modem connection. With the built-in grounded European plug the EuroSurge works "as is" in Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and many Eastern European countries. See EuroSurge Adaptor list below if you are traveling to other countries.
